Learn the grooves that matter to you, one bar at a time
Ghost notes, accents and flams, played on a ’79 Ludwig Maple. Hear it, take it apart, loop the hard bar, slow it down, then bring it up to speed.
How to learn any groove
Five steps, the order a teacher uses. Each one is on this page to try.
- Listen, slowlyHear what makes it groove, at a tempo you can follow.
- Loop the hard barThe one you keep fumbling goes round until it sits.
- Bring it up to speedStart where it is clean, and let the tempo climb.
- Play the song, part by partThe whole song on the stand, read ahead or loop the part.
- Play it without the drumsFind out if the groove is yours.
Listen, slowly, and hear what makes it groove
Slow a groove down until you can follow every note. Then switch the ghost notes off: the quiet notes you lose are what make it feel good, and what you are here to learn. Do the same with the accents.
61 grooves in the app, from beginner to advanced, full song arrangements included. All of these play on a free account.
Loop the bar that trips you up, then let it climb
Bracket one bar and it goes round and round. Start slow enough to play it clean, and let the Tempo Trainer bring it up.
Repetition, without the rewinding
Bracket the bar you keep fumbling and it goes round and round, the groove never stopping. When it sits, drag the bracket to take in the next bar.
Fast is easy once your slow becomes clean
Learning a part, the Tempo Trainer is your best friend. It moves the tempo underneath you, step by step, so your hands stay on the sticks and your attention stays on the groove.
Play the song, part by part
Open a song from the library, or one your teacher sends you, and press Focus: the whole song on the stand, every bar written out when you want to read ahead, and just the part you are learning on a loop.

Can you hold the groove when the drums drop out?
Play along, then the drums go quiet. Keep going. When it comes back: were you early, late or dead on? It’s harder than you think.
Ten focused minutes a day, free: every groove above, Beats, Shift and Inner Pulse. With a free account the whole metronome and its Tempo Trainer are free all day.

Got the groove? Build your own version note by note, ghosts, accents and flams included, or move it between eighths, triplets and sixteenths on one steady pulse.
Make the bar yourself
Tap the grid to add or remove a note. Hold one for everything else.
Master your subdivisions: the secret to great timing
A bar of quarters, then eighths, triplets and sixteenths, all on the same pulse. Hard to do, and seriously satisfying when it locks.
Press play, then tap a bar's feel to change it. The beat never moves, only what fills it.
This is a taster. In the app you can shift between any subdivision and time signature:
- Half
- Quarter
- 8th
- Triplet
- 16th
- Quintuplet
- Sextuplet
- Septuplet
- 32nd
Give a whole bar or a single beat its own, and accent or rest any note.

Twenty years of grooves, taught one bar at a time
I'm a drummer and teacher with a master's degree from the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus. I curated, programmed or played every beat in the core library myself, on a kit I recorded hit by hit in my own studio.

In their own words

“For me, Timekeeper simply makes practice easier, more fun and more effective.”
I don't know of any other solution that brings these features together in the same way.
The mother of one of my students, a 14-year-old drummer, sent me this. I hadn't asked for it.
“Your app is absolutely phenomenal. He thought it was so much fun to practise with: Shift, sextuplets and more, with both the Tempo Trainer and Inner Pulse. He finds it really motivating. He was almost (only almost) sad to go on a school trip, because it meant he couldn't practise drums.”
